A Novel Soundtrack

Since my debut novel, Other Words for Love, was published in 2011, I have often been asked these questions:

Does music help with your writing?

Do you have a playlist for your books?

The answer to both questions is YES! Of course. Absolutely.

I had an extensive playlist while writing Other Words for Love. The story is set in the 1980s, and I immersed myself in music from that era.

One song that captures the emotions of the main character during her intense relationship with her boyfriend is the beautifully haunting “Love My Way” by the Psychedelic Furs:

Music inspires my writing. It helps me to get into the psyche of my characters and the essence of their scenes, and it functions like the soundtrack of a movie.

While working on my latest novel, Independently Wealthy, I had lots of music in mind. In fact, most of my playlist is mentioned in the book. The story is set in present-day New York, and much of it takes place during the holidays—so my playlist reflects the city, the season, and the characters’ feelings.

Independently Wealthy will be published by St. Martin’s Press on December 2, 2014—but until then, you can check out its soundtrack below!
